Scarlett Cooke

How did you first come to Dance?
I’ve been dancing since I was three years old, starting with ballet and later following my dream of going to dance school. Through that journey, I learnt so much about the level of fitness needed to be a dancer and how important strength and stamina are, not just for performance but for preventing injury too.

What is your professional background?
I graduated from musical theatre college and went on to work as a professional dancer. I now have over seven years’ experience teaching dance to all ages, specialising in ballet, jazz, musical theatre and contemporary. I’m currently working towards my qualification with the Royal Academy of Dance to teach graded ballet professionally.

What do you love most about teaching and helping people move?
I love seeing people improve and genuinely enjoy their time in class. Dance is a skill and can be challenging, but it should also be fun and not taken too seriously.

Who do you love working with?
I really love teaching beginners and watching them grow week by week. Seeing people achieve their own personal goals and start to enjoy exercise is so rewarding. The small wins are always the most important ones.

How would you describe your class?
Vibrant, fluid, rhythmic and fun. Playful but focused on building strength and stamina, with lots of repetition and great music.

What do you hope someone feels when they leave your class?
I want people to leave feeling joyful (and a little bit tired!). Like they’ve had a brilliant class, achieved something for themselves and really enjoyed the process. It’s about getting lost in the music and just letting go.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not teaching?
I’m a full-time dancer and teacher, so my life is very much centred around movement. But I also love getting out into the countryside for walks with my brown sprocker, Bonnie, and of course enjoying a good sweet treat.
